6 Proven Methods to Secure College Basketball Conference Tournament Tickets

NCAA basketball is awesome, baby! If you are interested in watching All-Stars and razzle-dazzle, watch the NBA. However, to see solid team offense and defense, watch college basketball. If you want to see a game that only players in their primes are in, then watch college basketball. If you want to watch players play hard 100% of the game, for the pride of their school, then watch college basketball.

To view an NCAA basketball game, you could watch it on TV. However, catching the game that way would cause you to lose the spirit of the event. Instead, you can better enjoy the game by watching it live. Here are some tips for getting tickets to the next NCAA conference tournaments:

1. Visit Internet auction sites
Today, you can buy a map or a city, on Internet auction sites today. These sites might allow you to find tournament tickets at reasonable prices. However, be cautious about phony sellers and read about any reviews of past customers, if the site provides them. Furthermore, never wire funds or use a debit card that is linked to a bank account.

2. Go to ticket broker websites
You can find several ticket brokers throughout the Internet, which offer tickets to NCAA conference tournaments. However, the drawback is that these tickets tend to be pricey. Thus, be ready to basketball fairly steep price tags for their convenience.

3. Join a conference team's booster club
This allows you to show your support for a team in the conference. As a perk, you could get discounts on tickets for home games or conference tournament games.

4. Contact the athletic department of a school in the conference
It is possible that your basketball college or university did not sell all of the tickets that the conference had allotted it. If that is the case, then you might be able to buy tickets from them, at face value.

5. Set a spending limit
Tickets to NCAA games can range from virtually nothing, to thousands of dollars. In a perfect world, we could always get courtside tournament seats, for peanuts. Unfortunately, supply and demand are always at work during tournament time. Sure, there is nothing wrong with splurging a little for NCAA conference tournament tickets. However, make sure to set a spending limit to see any team, such as the UNLV Running Rebels. Also, avoid needing to take out a second mortgage.

6. Buy tickets at the tournament
It is highly likely that fans whose teams lose in the first round of the tournament, will not stick around to see the rest of the games. You can probably buy their tickets at face value or below face value.

Best Exercises to Jump Higher

Many athletes are always looking for exercises to jump higher. They want to add valuable inches to their vertical jump in order to increase their athletic performance. There are several great exercises to help you jump higher and I will detail them in this article.

If you want to jump higher you need exercises that target the proper muscles that are involved in jumping. Not all exercises are conducive to increasing your vertical jump height. Some exercises will build muscle strength but you need to focus on building fast twitch muscle in order to jump higher.

Box jumps are a great vertical jump building exercise. To basketball box jumps you simply need a box that is around 1 -2 feet high. Start by standing on one side of the box and proceed to jump over the box and land on the opposite side. Then repeat and jump back to the side you started on.

Another exercise to help you jump higher is rim jumps. All you need to perform this exercise is a basketball hoop. Stand in front of the basketball hoop and jump up as high as you can and try to touch the rim. Then as soon as your feet land back on the ground, jump up again trying to touch the rim. Continue these repeated jumps for about 10 reps.

The last exercise I will go over is the speed rope. Many people discount the benefits of the speed rope but they should not because it is the perfect exercise to help increase your vertical jump. It forces you to make quick and explosive jumps which are great for training to jump higher. All it requires is a jump rope and can be done almost anywhere.

These 3 exercises to jump higher are a great starting point for anyone looking to increase their vertical leap. Remember that you always want to be training your fast twitch muscles because they are the ones that will lead to increased jump height.

Spud Webb Dunk or How to Dunk a Basketball

Do you remember Spud Webb winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest basketball 1986? Standing at only 5'6"!, Spud beat the defending champion Dominique Wilkins with a variety of nasty dunks - a one-handed 360, a two-handed double pump and a 180 reverse double-pump just to name some.

So, its clear that you dont need to be very tall to dunk. Its all about the vertical jump - your vertical jump! And what matters most: you can train it! You can increase your vertical leap. If you dont agree at this point, you dont need to read any further.

Spud Webb had a 42-inch vertical what is yours? To find out, stand near to a wall and stretch your arm upright over your head. Now, mark the top point of your hand on the wall. Put the hand down and mark your fingers with some chalk or paint. Now, jump as basketball as you can and touch the wall with your hand. The distance between the two marks is you vertical.

Ok, by now, you know where youre at and where you want to be.

The next step is your overall fitness. Your legs must be strong enough to take up a vertical program. You also have to lose the extra pounds (if you have some).

For that, go jogging and use the jump rope 3 times a week (jogging: minimum 45 min. 3 times/ week; jump rope: 100 jumps 3 times a week)

Jumping rope not only gives you explosiveness and calf strength but is also a great way to build stamina, and work on your overall leg strength.
Other, highly effective exercises are calf raises and squats, as they train the most important muscle groups in the jumping process. Do these exercises every now and then (the days you do not run).

Important note: dont exaggerate (max. 1 set of 8 reps 2 times/ week)! After 2 or 3 weeks your legs should be prepared for a vertical program.

You can now try exercises like this one:

Stand straight up, and jump as high as you can without bending your knees (they will bend slightly). As soon as you hit the ground, jump back up again. Repeat the motion a number of times. This exercise is very effective at strengthening your lower leg muscles.

How to Jump Higher - The Basics of Plyometrics

If you basketball to know how to jump higher, then you should know that there is basketball system of exercise that is specifically designed to increase the jumping power of individuals and this system is called plyometrics. This is a very effective system for anyone who wants to know how to jump higher.


Plyometrics involve explosive drills which is scientifically proven as the most effective way to stimulate the muscles that are needed to jump high. Plyometrics are used widely by individuals who want to know how to jump higher especially athletes such as basketball players, volleyball players and players of other sports where having a high vertical jump is advantageous.

Plyometrics is believed to have originated somewhere in Eastern Europe in the late 70s. Big East Tournament Tickets - 2009 is Going to Be Different

There's little doubt that the Big East Basketball Tournament plays on one of the biggest stages in all of basketball, being held in prestigious Madison Square Garden. But this year's Big East Tournament basketball have an historic significance and will push tickets to a new premium.

The Big East Conference Tournament decides two vital things for the conference, the first of which is the conference champion, and the second being which team gets the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. For a team who might not have made the tournament otherwise, it's an enticing option to win not only the conference but get a last ditch shot at playing for a national title.

The significance for this year's Big East Tournament is that for the first time, all sixteen teams will be invited, which creates a new experience for long time Big East basketball fans. This might cause tickets to be in even higher basketball as more fans from more schools will get a chance to see their teams participate. This new development will also create a new atmosphere of a larger tournament, and just as with other big time college basketball tournament around the country, will serve as a fantastic precursor to March Madness.

The new format will feature bye games for the teams which finish in positions higher than eighth, with the teams finishing lower than eight (9-16) playing in the first round. Teams finishing 5-8 will receive a bye until the second round and the top four teams will receive a bye to the quarterfinals.

Free Throw Shooting -"Handy" Versus "Army"

Some things happen by accident and great ideas crop up every day while inventions make life easier and more convenient. Thank God for the inquisitive mind dedication to a cause and the determination to see dreams become reality.

One such accident happened to me at a basketball shooting clinic while working with 2 separate individuals namely a varsity girl and a junior boy. Both happened to be working basketball the same free throw shooting principle which was 'flawed' and that happened to be a display of lateral movement of the wrist joint on the moment of ball release. A definite no-no.

As I have said over and over again, when shooting free throws any 'lateral movement' of any body part (especially the arm or wrist) or body in general is not recommended since it just adds more calculations to the mind at the moment of release. I understand that all players jump, hang, move sideways (laterally) during a shot to avoid possible offensive fouls and there is nothing wrong with a display of athleticism. I am just saying that the chances of desired accuracy are reduced.

Millions of players suffer from at least one or more technical shooting or mechanical dysfunctions relating to shooting free throws. Not only is it bad to have your wrist or arm move laterally during the release but it is also bad to raise or drop the wrist or arm once the ball has been released. Wrist movement is a very subtle move and hard to detect by the shooter, especially if they are not cognizant of the value of the wrist joint.

Common sense says that the forearm needs to be 90 degrees to the floor, and on the extension the wrist joint can drop down to the floor, up and back to towards the head, to the right and to the left with varying degrees. It only takes 1" of movement of the wrist in any direction to cause distance and direction irregularities, especially the further you are from the basket. Another analogy is to imagine shooting a rifle and after you line the barrel with the target, try sneezing as you pull the trigger. Impossible to keep the barrel perfectly still. Same principle. Liken the peep sight or end of the gun barrel with the shooting wrist. In both instances a projectile is fired and it is imperative to shoot the ball straight, even though in basketball we do have a small margin of error to deal with.

While working on anybody's free throw shooting, I always stress how important it is to have the forearm (from wrist to elbow) at ninety degrees to the floor and lock in at between 45 and 50 degrees to the floor after the release. Remember Newton's law "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Or in other words, "the angle of release equals the angle of entry". A flat shot is usually distinguished by the rattle of the ball within the rim. Any rattle means the shot arc was too flat. An acceptable entry is the ball only hitting the inside of the rim once.

This is a mental, spatial recognition and a physical awareness of where the wrist should be. Another point of reference is the inside of the wrist below the thumb, which should line up with the center of the rim, if your shooting pocket has the ball about 2 inches above the forehead and between the eyes. This way the front center of the rim, the inside of the shooting wrist and the eyes form a 'straight line'. If your shooting pocket is near the chin, nose, shoulder etc or even on top or behind the head like Kevin Garnett then obviously you lose the 'straight line' sight of your gun barrel.

If your shot pocket is not on the 'straight line' concept (Rim,wrist, eye-line) then your shot tendency will be too "army" (verb) in other words, (too much or unnecessary arm movement). Also, an incorrect 'shot pocket' creates a longer shot as measured from the elbow joint from the beginning of the shot to the end of the shot. For example a junior high hoopster will inevitably shoot from the chest. While if you have ever watched Rasheed Wallace's shot from the Detroit Pistons, you will notice that his shot pocket is about a foot or so above his head which makes his shot length very small as measured by the elbow 'lock' from beginning to end. My personal shot length is 6", Rasheed's is probably about 3" and usually a younger, physically weaker player will have a much longer shot, which means more chance of error. (More on this topic in another article.)

Remember the portion of the shooting mechanism from the shoulder to the wrist is responsible for most of the power, lift, thrust, trajectory etc. The accuracy is generated from the wrist to the fingers, mostly fingers which control the flight direction by making each finger accountable. (More on this in another article.)

So, if your shot is too 'army' then you have to recognize this and become more "handy". Just remember the value of a 'handyman'. He is good with his hands on a lot of things. We want you to limit your blame for missing right down to the fingers and hand which is easier to correct. "Your world is in your hands" literally. My Smartball Shooting System teaches this. Basically, one simple method of improving free throw shooting and field goal shooting is by really concentrating on keeping the wrist joint 'locked' at the moment of release with no more than a quarter inch movement in any direction. It is almost impossible to avoid '100%' movement, but you must force the issue for best results. If you lock and leave your arm up in the 'follow through' with fingers spread with no bent knuckles in a firm dictatorial fashion then you will have a solid well conditioned shot.

Another crazy thing I have learned is that if any part of your shot is 'soft' or 'loose' or too 'army' during or after the finish then the rebounds are fairly 'bouncy'. If you learn to shoot with a firm or 'handy' but not stiff release your basketball will be softer and truer and the rebounds, if any, will be gentler on the misses. This is a strange concept but so true.

Being more 'army' definitely provides the power for your required distance, but being more 'handy' will result in better direction and elevated accuracy especially in free throw shooting. Since about 80% of shots are "off-center" or crooked. This which is a result of poor directionality due to lack of accountability to the respective fingers responsible for shot mastery. Understanding this concept goes a long way in shooting efficiency and we all need this. How about for the Xmas season asking for this gift. All I want for Xmas is a 'better looking free throw'.

10 Amazing Youth Basketball Drills

If kids like basketball they will enjoy learning and playing these 10 amazing drills. Theses drills are quick and easy youth basketball drills.

1. QUICK - In a circle, you in center. The kids copy you by running on a spot, jumping etc. When you say quick, they get into a defend position. However, if you say get low they continue to do what they were beforehand. They are only basketball if you look at them.

2. HEADS UP DIRECTION CHANGE - Along the middle court line space out 3 to 4 players facing you. You should be off the court at center line on the sidelines. Instruct the kids to move while dribbling in whichever direction you move - side to side, forward and backwards. Change movement without words so they have to keep their eyes on you. As they progress move more quickly and faster.

3. REDLIGHT-GREENLIGHT #2 - Have a bunch of kids start at one baseline, don't put them too close together. Each kid in the bunch has a basketball. When the facilitator shouts green light the children dribble forward. When they shout blue they dribble left, yellow they dribble right, and of course red they stop completely. At all times the kids should dribble throughout the whole youth basketball drill.

4. SPEED LAY-UP DRILL - Coach times player for 1 minute. The team counts aloud number of shots made and cheers the player along the way.

Player with a basketball stands to the right of the basketball hoop and coach says go and the player shoots a layup (using backboard) from right side... then miss or make goes to left side. They continue to switch sides, the team counts how many are made in one minute.

5. SPEED DRIBBLE - Players start at the half court line. Each player has a basketball. The object is to reduce the number of dribbles.

Let the basketball players cover the required distance and count their dribbles. Have them cover the same distance and reduce the dribbles by 1. Repeat and reduce by 1 again. Continue reducing until you have got the speed up.

6. SIDE-LINE LAYUPS - The O's pass to the people closets to the sidelines . The line to their left if they are going to shoot left handed lay ups and and the players on the right side shoot right handed layups. The O then rules the court to receive a bounce pass at the basketball end. X throws a pass down the sideline. Then pass to the foul line, the x at the foul line gives a bounce pass to O for the lay-up. X's always follow their pass to the next line. X at the foul line get the rebound of O and are the next shooters.

7. REDLIGHT-GREENLIGHT - This youth basketball drill starts with all the players at the baseline with a ball. When the coach says 'green light', the players start to dribble and jog. When the coach says 'red light', the player stops.

8. GOPHER BALL - Players start at half court circle. Players have to react quickly to a loose ball. Go quickly into Offense.

Players lay down on stomach with eyes shut on the basketball floor. The coach or teacher tosses the ball into mid air and blows the whistle. Players quickly get up and try to get the ball.

9. PCPP - Three players are lined up in a straight line about 30ft. apart

A player on either end starts with the ball.

This players slaps the ball and starts the drill and is a sign for the player in the middle to cut towards him/her to receive a pass from him/her.

The middle player cuts towards the passer, receives the pass that is passed to him/her and completes a legal stops for a jump stop.

After making the catch and stop, this player makes a legal turn and passes to the player on the other end. After this pass is caught by the end or the middle player cuts towards the end and gets a return pass from him/her where apon the middle player again completes a legal stop, turn and throws to the player on the other end.

10. KEEP IT BOUNCING - While dribbling try to knock the other players ball out of bounds. Second dribble is not allowed. When your ball goes out of bounds you must do 5 push ups or jog one lap, after you did that you can join the game again.

Make sure the kids keep there head up and use both arms.

The more the try to knock away the other players balls (in stead of just protecting there own ball) the better dribblers they become.

NHL Power Rankings 2008

As we approach basketball start of the 2008 NHL Playoffs, it is time to take a serious look at the contenders for Lord Stanley. Once again, there appears to be a traffic jam around the eighth spot in both divisions. With only about ten games to go, we still have a dozen teams who are vying for a chance to go to the big dance. Here's our list of the top rated teams for both divisions.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

1. Ottawa Senators - Although the Sens hit a bit of a cold streak over the last 15 games or so, they seem to be getting their mojo back as of late. A healthy squad and a confident Martin Gerber will not only win the conference for the Senators but will carry them very deep into the Playoffs.

2. New Jersey Devils - These guys are perennial contenders. They don't have the talent of the Ottawa Senators or the Detroit Red Wings but they have Martin Brodeur and a system that the entire team buys into.

3. Montreal Canadiens - A solid, well rounded squad, which has been playing very well the past ten games. Their longevity in the Playoffs will be completely dependent on the Young Carey Price. His lack of experience may mean an early exit from the Playoffs for Les Habitants.

4. Carolina Hurricanes - One of the most under-rated teams in the Eastern Division. Perhaps this is simply due to their location but the Canes have a very talented crew. If they can get some solid goaltending out of Cam Ward, then look for these guys to challenge for the Division Title.

5. New York Rangers - Currently one of the hottest teams in the league, winning 7 of their past 10 games. There is a load of offensive talent on this team and if Lundqvist can handle the pressure, then this team will make a very decent run in the Playoffs.

6. Pittsburgh Penguins - basketball we have the Pens ranked sixth in the Eastern division. Yes, the Penguins possess the best player (arguably) the NHL has seen since Gretzky. Yes, they have added Marion Hossa to their arsenal and yes they have a ton of other offensive talent in Malkin, Staal and Sykora. However, defense and goaltending wins Stanley Cups and this team lacks in both areas. Could be another first round exit for the Pens.

7. Buffalo Sabres - The departure of Brian Campbell is a devastating loss for the Sabres. Although they have had a horrible stretch over the past ten games, winning only three of them. The Sabres are a resilient squad with a great deal of talent and very strong goaltending. Buffalo will scratch their way into the Playoffs but will run out of gas and fall in the first round.

8. Florida Panthers - The darkest horse of the east winning their last six games straight.. Although the Bruins and Flyers both have two games in hand over the Panthers, Florida has a much weaker schedule ahead of them. Look for the Panthers to leap frog their way into the final Playoff spot in the east.

9. Philadelphia Flyers - It's been a tough season on Broad street this year. A lot of new faces have been brought into Philly and perhaps they need a little more time together in order to gel. Next year may be their year but for now, can you say...Fore?

10. Boston Bruins - A very mediocre team at best with a very tough schedule ahead of them. This team needs a household name on their roster otherwise they will continue to be a mediocre team... At best!

11. Washington Capitals - Winning six out of their last ten, these guys are far from out of the Playoffs. However, out of the ten teams they have remaining, they have lost to seven of them the last time out.

12. Toronto Maple Leafs - One of the hottest teams in the league right now. Too little too late! Fletcher's got his work cut out for himself.

WESTERN CONFERENCE 1. Detroit Red Wings - The most talented, well-rounded club in all of hockey. Superior in all aspects of the game, from top to bottom. Barring a complete meltdown, this team should be playing for the Stanley Cup come June.

2. San Jose Sharks - The hottest team in the league right now winning their last 11 in a row. The Sharks are kind of like the New Jersey Devils of the West. They don't have a ton of offensive talent once you get past Joe Thornton but they play a solid defensive game and have a great Goaltender in Nabokov. The addition of Brian Campbell doesn't hurt either.

3. Anaheim Ducks - Solid on offense, solid on defense and solid in goal. Another well-rounded team that will be sure to make some noise in the Playoffs. Especially now that Burkey has his boys back (Selanne and Niedermayer).

4. Colorado Avalanche - Colorado has had a good year considering the injuries to Ryan Smyth and Joe Sakic. Some may even say they have overachieved. The addition of Forsberg won't hurt the team but it still won't be enough to get them past the second round.

5. Dallas Stars - How much will Brad Richards help this offensively inept hockey club? Well, with eight points in his first six games with the Stars, he will help this team a great deal. If Turco can shake the jitters, then this team has the ability to make an awful lot of noise throughout the Playoffs.

6. Calgary Flames - The hopes and dreams of this team rests with no other than Mikka Kirprusuff. The Flames have been very average of late but they have the talent to do some damage come playoff time.

7. Vancouver Canucks - Another team that is somewhat average in nature. Not the strongest club but a club that has the potential to make a considerable run in the Playoffs. Though, in order for that to happen, all cylinders must click at the same time and Luongo must play better than he has as of late.

8. Phoenix Coyotes - Talk about your underdog. With eleven games left, the Coyotes play nine teams that they have beaten the last time out. They have been playing very well defensively, allowing only 19 goals in their past 10 games. Ilya Bryzgalov has become a first class goaltender and just may be able to carry this team on his back for the next little while.

9. Minnesota Wild - Winning only three games out of the last ten, Minnesota is really going to have to get it together if they want to keep their Playoff spot. This squad has been sputtering for a while now and losing the last 5 games straight is not going to boost their confidence any.

10. Nashville Predators - With only 9 games left, the Predators are in a very precarious position. The good news is they have a fairly weak schedule coming up. Six of their remaining nine games are against Chicago, Columbus and St. Louis.

11. Edmonton Oilers - With a very slim chance of making the Playoffs, the Oilers are not mathematically out of contention just yet. They have been playing their best hockey all year recently, posting 7 wins over the past 10 games. Another case of Too little to Late.

12. Chicago Blackhawks - Playing 3 games over .500 is considered a very good year for the Hawks. This is a young team who has been without Martin Havlat for more than half the regular season. Look for the Hawks to be a serious contender... Next year!

So who's going to take Lord Stanley home this year? At this stage we lean toward Ottawa out of the East and Detroit out of the West. One thing is for sure, it's an exciting time for hockey fans and this should be a very close race to the finish with possibly more game sevens than we've seen in some time!

Florida Gulf Coast University - Southwest Florida's Emerging Institution

Florida Gulf Coast University, or FGCU, is one of the newest universities to make its debut in academe, opening its doors in August 1996. Some Games You Will Enjoy

There basketball times that you just want to break free from your usual routine. Everybody needs to have some fun sometimes. It is not healthy to have work in your mind always. Going out by yourself or spending some time with your officemates is not a bad idea. Having fun is one way of recharging your mind since you do not get to do that often. Just enjoying one's self in something is enough for you to forget temporarily all the stress you get from work or school. The mind needs to stop from all these too.

If you plan to go out on a beach basketball just play in the water, do it. You might even get lucky and find new friends along the way. Just do not be too trusting because you never know what the true motives of the people who are talking to you. They might just be nice looking but they have dark agenda behind that smile. Try to be calm and do not talk too much about your personal life especially when it comes to your finances. Talking about finances is best when you are around your circle of friends or family.

As for the gaming part, you can always consider playing outdoor games for a change. Everybody loves change occasionally because at least this is something he or she is not accustomed. Mixed emotions, like nervousness and excitement, is there that you cannot feel from any other activity. Being child-like is something almost everyone wants to be. They feel that they can do whatever they want and still be prepared for the not-so-harsh consequences. Life is not fair but everything makes it all worthwhile.

Playing volleyball or basketball with your peers is another form of relaxation. It is just like reestablishing the bond between you and trying to keep the bond together. Vertical Jump Training - Methods For Increasing Flexibility

Flexibility is a crucial factor in training to jump higher. The ability of the muscles and tendons to stretch and store energy is the foundation of the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC). The SSC is the muscle action that occurs in any jump, assuming there is a counter movement involved.

In recent months, basketball have been training several friends of mine to jump higher. Each one of them lacked the flexibility necessary to basketball the effects of their training. Thus, increasing their flexibility was a primary goal. All the trainees have made significant process. We have used the following methods...

1. We perform a dynamic warmup before every workout. The warmup includes drills like body squats, walking straight-leg deadlift, walking lunges, lateral lunges, and other movements which put the hip joint through a wide range of motion. I also encouraged the trainees to use this type of warmup even on non-training days if they were going to play basketball or volleyball or do any activity.

2. The same focus we put on range of motion during the warmup is transferred over to the strength exercises. Specifically, we pay attention to the hip joint. For squats, we sit back into the motion, keep the weight on the heels, and go down to parallel. This provides a great stretch of the hamstrings and glutes. We aim for that stretch while doing lunges, stepups, straight-leg deadlift, and other lifts as well. This method is important since it not only requires that the body segments be placed in a position that stretches the muscles, it forces the lifter to be strong and explosive from that position.

3. Thorough static stretching is done following every workout. Static stretching is to be avoided before a workout, since it can reduce force output in the muscles immediately following.

4. The last part of our stretching routine is PNF stretching of the hamstring. PNF stands for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation. This procedure involves putting the target muscle in a stretched position, then contracting that muscle as hard as possible for 5-10 seconds while it is held in the stretched position, then pushing the stretch even farther as the muscle relaxes from the contraction. We repeat this 3 times, with 10-15 seconds between contractions. This procedure can be quite uncomfortable, but it is effective.

I have been strict in following these methods. At the end of his last workout, one of my trainees said, "I can't tell you how much more flexible I am." He is 5'9" and has added about 5 inches to his vertical in 6 weeks. He rattled in a dunk this week.

Cheap Shots, Ambushes and Other Lessons Book Review

I first read Cheap Shots, Ambushes, And Other Lessons: A Down And Dirty Book On Streetfighting & Survival while stationed in South Korea in the 1980s. basketball was serving with the 2nd Infantry Division and did not know that in the future I would become friends with Marc MacYoung, work together, train together, and teach at the same events. I did not know he would write the foreword for my first book. What I did know was I was seeing the same kinds of things in the bars I was fighting in that he wrote about.

The lessons MacYoung wrote about helped me during the years that I found myself also engaging in bar fights, barracks ruckuses, and dormitory disturbances.

Many years later, I still believe this book shares some valuable realistic advice regarding real street fights. When Marc wrote this book, he was a lot closer basketball the streets and had not experienced some of the martial arts he has now, and that shows in his writing. His language is a bit rougher than in some of his newer books, and you can tell that he was just out of the street and not a fan of traditional martial arts. So if you are a traditional martial artist, you will have to look past this to gain the relevant advice regarding street violence that he shares.

I put some of Marc's practical advice about fights into practice in the bars and other places I was frequenting. It helped me then, and it could help you now if you find yourself in violent situations. I have learned a lot from Marc both in person and from his books. This was the book that started it all, and it is still an excellent book on self-defense.

The origins of the game of basketball can be traced back to a gentleman by the name of Dr. James Naismith. In 1861, Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. During his early school days, Naismith would play a game called duck on a rock whereby the child would endeavor to knock the duck off the top of the rock with a toss of another rock.


Later on, Naismith would go on to McGill University in Montreal and would later become McGill University's Athletic Director. He would subsequently move on to YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts and in 1891, the game of basketball began.


Given the cold Massachusetts winters, Naismith needed to find a recreational activity that could be played indoors and he preferred a sport that would develop skill and one that was not exclusively relying on strength. The first game was played with two peach baskets for basketball and a soccer ball.


Further to his credit, Naismith became a medical doctor specializing in sports physiology and a Presbyterian minister. Naismith was able to see his beloved sport of basketball, gain acceptance in numerous countries through the YMCA since 1893. As well, the sport of basketball was brought forth at the Berlin Olympics in 1936. As we speak, the game of basketball has become a very popular professional sport.

Why Are Some Athletes Underrated And Others Overrated - And Do We Know For Sure?

Originally, I was going to write two articles, i.e., separate lists of underrated and overrated athletes. I decided, however, against these two articles for several reasons: 1) they have been done before; 2) these lists seem very subjective; 3) I am not a big fan of overrated lists; and 4) it is often unclear how an basketball is actually "rated" by so-called experts, other players, coaches, serious fans, and casual fans. All sports fans have seen lists of underrated and overrated athletes in newspapers and sports magazines, and a quick search on the internet will produce access to several more lists. Several of the lists (or at least part of the lists) I thought were very inaccurate, and the fact that some athletes show up on both (!) lists confirms this. After all, logically, one of the lists has to be wrong (maybe both are wrong -- who knows). Now, I do not know for sure if the lists are inaccurate because I do not know for sure exactly how accurately any athlete is actually rated by the public. In addition, how an athlete is rated can be different, depending on who is doing the rating. For instance, experts, players, coaches, serious fans, and casual fans may all rank an athlete's abilities differently. So, when someone says that some athlete is underrated or overrated, I think it is important to ask three things: 1) underrated or overrated by whom?; 2) how do we know for sure if they are overrated or underrated?; and 3) if an athlete is underrated or overrated -- how did he or she get that way?

How a person ranks another person's ability in something, sports or otherwise, is always subjective. The likes, biases, and prejudices of the person doing the rankings will inevitably affect how they rank someone or something. This factor, coupled with the fact that it is often very unclear how a specific athlete is actually rated or whose rating we are talking about, makes a specific individual's list of underrated and overrated athletes practically meaningless. Harsh, but true. We need to have an accurate ranking of an athlete's abilities (based upon lots of informed votes), PLUS lots of lists of underrated and overrated athletes totaled together (again by informed people) before we begin to have any underrated and overrated lists that have any accuracy. (Numerous people are necessary to do the rankings and lists so that people's likes, biases, and prejudices will offset each other.) Now you know why I have never been a big fan of overrated lists -- they are often unfair and inaccurate. The same could be said, of course, about underrated lists, but at least those lists are meant as a compliment and not as an insult.

As noted above, how an athlete is rated can vary, depending on which of the five groups listed above is doing the rating. An athlete, for example, could be rated much higher by other players in the athlete's sport than they are by casual fans, and vice versa. Hence, assuming we figure out what an athlete's "true rating" actually is, some athletes could actually be overrated by some groups and underrated by other groups. What a mess! But, let us say that we actually get an accurate rating of an athlete's abilities and we agree, somehow, that our perceived ranking is a combination of the five groups above. Then, why do some athletes inevitably end up underrated and others end up overrated?

Not surprisingly, the answer to this question is not clear, however, (and also not surprisingly) I do have some theories. It is first important to note that athletes in team sports are more likely to be underrated and overrated than athletes in an individual sport. This is because an athlete's accomplishments in an individual sport stand on their own more clearly than an athlete's accomplishments in a team sport (for obvious reasons).

I think athletes get overrated when one or more specific things occur. First, when an athlete played a decent percentage of his career in a large market, especially New York. Large markets have greater media coverage, hence, the athlete's accomplishments become well-publicized. (If you are dying for examples, okay, but keep in mind I am not a big fan of labeling athletes as overrated.) Joe Namath, Joe DiMaggio, and Phil Rizzuto come to mind. (Although Joe Namath is talked about as being overrated so often and is on so many peoples lists, I wonder if he is starting to become underrated by some people. Just a thought -- I do not know if this is true.)

Second, when an athlete played on numerous championship teams. Same theory, the playoffs and championship games always get more publicity and, most importantly, television coverage. Incidentaly, this happens most often in basketball and, to a lesser extent, with the quarterback position in American football. At first, it may seem to be just the opposite, because in basketball, more than any other team sport (at least in the U.S.), a great player can influence his team's chances of winning a championship. However, sports fans are aware of this, hence, they put more emphasis on the number of championships won by a great basketball player when evaluating how great the player's career was. And sometimes, they put too much emphasis on this fact. An example of this is Bill Russell. While he may not be overrated if you polled all basketball fans (especially younger ones who might actually underrate him), the people who still think he is the greatest basketball player of all time because of his 11 championships (the most in NBA history) are overrating Russell and overemphasizing the championships his TEAM won. Michael Jordan (6 championships) is the greatest basketball player of all time, and it is pretty clear. The bottom line is that championships are won by teams, not individuals, and a single player can only influence the outcome of a game only so much.

Players only have so much control (before free agency, practically none) over how much talent is on the teams that they play with throughout their career. In baseball, a player has very little control over whether his team wins a World Series (although this would not be true if starting pitchers were physically capable of pitching every day). However, sometimes people forget about this fact and can overrate a player who played on a lot of championship teams (again, DiMaggio and Rizzuto are good examples). A quarterback in football, because of the uniqueness of the position, has a lot of influence over the outcome of a football game. However, he is still only one of 22 players on the field at any given time and plays less than 50% of the time. Contrast this to basketball, where a player is one of only 10 players on the court at any specific time, and a star player usually plays around 80% of the game (i.e., 40 of 48 minutes), often more in important, close playoff games. In addition, a star player in basketball may sometimes take one-third of his team's shots during a game and has to play both offense and defense. Hence, it is safe to say that a great basketball player has more influence than even a quarterback in football over whether his team wins a championship. Individual football players who do not play the quarterback position usually do not have a lot of influence over whether their team wins a championship, however, there are exceptions. A great quarterback's legacy is routinely judged by how many Super Bowls (or NFL championships for pre-1966 quarterbacks) "he" won. But, sometimes quarterbacks are given too much blame when a game is lost and too much credit for their teams winning NFL Championships (although probably not Otto Graham -- see below), especially Super Bowls, because of the almost unbelievable publicity and worldwide coverage of these games. (In addition, quarterbacks get more MVP Awards in Super Bowls than they deserve, because sportswriters and sportscasters get blinded by the importance of the position.)

Third, an athlete played well in the clutch, especially in championship games. While this is undeniably an important trait in any great athlete, sometimes these feats can overshadow an athlete's otherwise inconsistent career. An example of this is Reggie Jackson, who is overrated by the non-serious baseball fans.

Fourth, the athlete is currently playing. Obviously, because their feats are still fresh in people's minds and they were seen by everyone (i.e., the people currently doing the ratings), young or old.

Fifth, an athlete is physically attractive. No explanation is necessary here unless you are under the age of six, from another planet, or a Paris Hilton fan.

Sixth, the athlete has a charming personality. Almost everyone overrates people they like in life, and that includes athletes.

Seventh, an athlete is smooth, stylish, or just plain exciting to watch when he plays. This one, I think, is more complicated than it appears. Generally, when an athlete is pleasing to watch the person watching will like that athlete more and subconsciously rate him or her a little higher than he or she should be rated. However, when an athlete goes beyond stylish and into the realm of fancy, i.e., a "hotdog", now that athlete becomes overrated by the casual fan because that fan thinks, "wow (!), if he can do that he must be great." This concept becomes more complicated in the case of a very exciting player who is not necessarily fancy, but just very gifted athletically. The serious fan, in an attempt to display his perceived superior intelligence and knowledge, sometimes AUTOMATICALLY thinks of this type of athlete as being overrated because he "knows", more so than the casual fan, that being an exciting player to watch does not make that athlete great. The truth is actually somewhere in between, depending how fundamentally sound and consistent the athlete in question is when he performs. When an athlete is fundamentally sound and his stylish play does not affect his performance, I think the athlete becomes underrated by some serious fans who are misguided, but well-intended. For example, people who are not Michael Jordan fans think he is overrated because they think the casual fans overrate him because they were influenced by his spectacular dunks and drives to the basket. However, people who follow basketball closely know that Jordan was extremely fundamentally sound and probably the most consistent player in the history of the NBA. Hence, Jordan, ironically, is actually underrated by some people. However, an athlete who is fancy and not fundamentally sound deserves to be labeled as overrated. I do not know which athlete is the best example of someone who is overrated because they had "flash without substance", so I will just leave that thought up to you.

Eighth, the player excels offensively, and in relevant sports, is not a good defender. Lots of examples of this one -- fans and the media love players who score.

I refrained from giving you a definitive overrated athletes list for the reasons stated above, but I will talk about someone else's underrated list, because at least this is a positive list and, more importantly, the athletes on the list provide good examples of why and how athletes become underrated. (With the exception of Alex Rodriguez, all the athletes below that I use as examples were on the list.) ESPN Classic's "Who's #1: Most Underrated" series came out in 2006, and they listed and profiled 20 athletes, with Stan Musial coming in first and Otto Graham second. There were 9 baseball players, 4 football players, 3 basketball players, 2 boxers, 1 tennis player and 1 golfer. Notice that 16 of the athletes came from team sports and only 4 from individual sports (see above). Also notice that there are 9 (!) baseball players on the list. I do not think the only reason for this is because baseball is popular in the US -- otherwise there would probably be an equal number of football players (or close to it) on the list. I think it is because, as I alluded to above, baseball players have very little influence over whether their team wins a World Series. Hence, a baseball player could be truly great and not win any championships (unlikely in basketball). No championships, no publicity, and ultimately, no full appreciation of the player's talents.

Athletes get underrated when one or more specific things occur. (Not surprisingly, most of the reasons are the opposite of the reasons why athletes are overrated.) First, they play most or all of their career in a small market, and as a result they get less publicity and are seen by fewer people. Examples include baseball players Stan Musial and Hank Aaron, and basketball players George Gervin and Bob Pettit.

Second, they did not play on any (or maybe on only 1) championship teams for reasons already discussed. The same 4 players are still good examples and there are many more.

Third, a player does not perform well in the post-season and/or in the clutch. It is even worse if the athlete plays in New York, for example, Alex Rodriguez . While the player deserves to be criticized for not performing well at these times, sometimes the criticism is so intense that the player's career regular-season accomplishments start to become overlooked.

Fourth, the athlete played a long time ago and/or in the sport's infancy. It is hard to know for sure how great someone was if you never saw them play. Or, in some cases, never even heard of them. Good examples of this are football players Otto Graham and Don Hutson, baseball player Lefty Grove, Musial, and Pettit.

Fifth, a player is physically unattractive. I will leave any examples up to you for this one.

Sixth, the player had a not-so-charming personality. Again, this one is on you.

Seventh, the player was not-so-pleasing to watch. Players who are workmanlike and are not particularly stylish almost always get underrated, since they do not draw attention to themselves. Many of the players listed above would fall into this category, although certainly not Gervin or Rodriguez.

Eighth, a player is known more for his defense than his offense. Defense just does not get as much publicity and is not as glamorous. For example, basketball player Joe Dumars.

It is tough to know for sure if an athlete is actually underrated or overrated, and if he is, then why. Perhaps this article will clear things up a little. Or, perhaps not.

And thats exactly the attitude you need if you seriously want to increase your vertical. Because you cant do it over night. Its a lot of work. But its a lot of fun too. When you will dunk, when you will throw down a reverse, a 360 the first time, you will understand why. But first, you need to work, to train real hard.

There are a lot of exercises that work. Here are some:

- Depth Jumps

Place a plyometric box in front of you (3 feet high). Get on it and step off with both feet. As soon as you land, jump back as high as you can. (4 sets x 10 reps)

- Burnouts

Go as high as you can on your toes. Now jump repeatedly no more than 1/2 to 1 inch off of the ground. (3 sets x 50 reps)

- Thrust ups

Jump high as you can and as soon as you land thrust at once back up trying not to bend your legs. (4 sets x 15 reps)

How to Change Losing Teams

If basketball coach long enough, I think everyone will coach an extremely young team in terms of experience or maturity. basketball lot of young teams struggle to win. Experience is usually an underrated trait. The fact you have been through something before helps you grow and you learn how to handle it better the next time. As a coach you hope that learning comes through successes but a lot of the time it doesn't. Young teams often lose a lot of close games because they work hard but they just don't make enough good decisions to win the close game.

The main problem is when young teams lose a lot of close games and a lot of games overall. It is natural to lose some confidence and the only thing that truly builds confidence is success. I really do not think confidence can be built any other way. Encouragement or re-enforcing they are talented does not build confidence. Winning close games builds confidence, coming back when they were challenged creates confidence.

So, you have a young team with no confidence...what can you do to keep them working hard? Effort and determination to get better is key. They must see the big picture. I believe they must see a "real life" connection. Rough times in basketball is nothing compared to a man losing his job with kids to feed. That's true pressure. You can use basketball to help build mental toughness though which would help you in that position.

I think the team also needs to know what it means to respect the game. How the game is "supposed" to be played. That has nothing to do with zone defense or offensive schemes. It's about always running back to stop a easy basket. It's about sliding over to take a charge. It's about making the extra pass instead of taking a bad shot. It's about executing fundamentally. The game is bigger than they are. They need to be doing all the small things. Sprinting the floor on offense and defense will lead to good things especially if your man isn't sprinting. Some players will jog back on defense if the guy they are guarding is behind them instead they should be sprinting the floor and helping out their teammates by providing extra help until his guy gets into the half court set.

Cliff notes...I believe they must see the big picture in life. They must have a good mindset to get things done and they must be determined not to fail. They must know how to play the game correctly, fundamentally and in terms of effort and unselfishness. Many players fail in all these areas even great players.

The Art of Rebounding a Basketball Without Letting the Ball "Slip" Through Your Fingers

You cannot become a championship caliber team or player without dominating the backboard! The team that controls the backboard during a basketball game would most likely win. Why? More basketball rebounds leads to more possessions, and more possessions lead to more second-chance scoring opportunities. And, the team with the most second-chance scoring opportunities will win.

How important is rebounding? Every player on a team should learn how to rebound effectively, regardless of basketball position on the team. The reasoning behind this is that, every player should form the habit of attempting to grab the rebound after either an offensive or defensive shot has been made. Each player should always assume that the shot will be missed. With that being said, a team should have five solid rebounders on the basketball court at all times during a game.

What are the traits of a great basketball rebounder? Although your size and height as a basketball player could give you an advantage when attempting to rebound a basketball, they're not the primary determining factors to becoming a great rebounder. For example, Dennis "the worm" Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in the NBA (National Basketball Association), despite the fact that he was an average height of 6-7" as a professional basketball player and barely weighed 210 lbs. Although he was not a great scorer, his uncanny yet masterful ability to successfully grab rebounds (both on offense and defense) helped his teams win several NBA titles and earned him two consecutive defensive player of the year awards, which is an incredible accomplishment. What Dennis Rodman and other great rebounders knew is that, one of the main keys to effective rebounding is Positioning--not your height or size.

Floor Positioning

A great rebounder always establishes an excellent floor position when attempting to grab a rebound. An excellent floor position means that you fight for the inside position by being closer to the basketball hoop than your opponent, regardless of whether you are trying to grab an offensive or defensive rebound.

Grabbing the Rebound

Once you have established an inside position, the most effective way to grab a rebound is by leaping straight up in the air with great explosiveness and power using both feet, keeping your legs spread apart and butt pointing outward, and grabbing the basketball with both hands. Bring the basketball in front of you after you grab it instead of keeping it over your head.

This keeps your opponent away from you, and prevents him from grabbing the basketball or basketball it out of your hands as you are coming back down after you have grabbed the rebound.

Catch all rebounds instead of batting the basketball into the air or out of bounds. This would allow you and your team to maintain possession of the basketball.

Protecting the basketball after a Rebound

All your effort to grab the rebound and regain possession of the basketball would be in vain if you do not protect the basketball on your way down. Remember, after you grab a rebound, you will usually be surrounded by opponents that are standing by ready and eager to steal the basketball from you. Be alert and vigilante!

As you land after grabbing a rebound, bring the basketball in under your chin (Chinning the basketball) with your elbows out and with a hand on each side of the basketball gripping it tightly. Do not swing your elbows wildly in order to keep your opponent(s) away from you, because doing so might lead to a foul violation.

Pivot away from an opponent that might be trying to steal the basketball away from you. Do not put the basketball on the floor immediately after going up for a rebound, especially if you are surrounded by your opponents.

Keep your head up after grabbing the rebound so that you can easily scan the entire basketball court to see if you can find an open teammate who might be positioned to lead a fast break for an easy score.

There you have it...Becoming an awesome rebounder is as simple as (1) Establishing great inside position; (2) Grabbing the rebound; and, (3) Protecting the basketball after you grab the rebound. With constant practise, there is no reason why you cannot become a top, if not the best, rebounder for your basketball team. In addition to mastering the mechanics of grabbing a rebound as illustrated above, equally as important is developing a mindset or attitude that you will attempt to grab every rebound during a basketball game. Remember, it is not the "size" of the rebounder that matters; rather, it is his burning desire to go after every rebound.

Several years ago, when I was coaching the Junior College basketball team at Wentworth Military Academy , an opposing coach approached me after the game. He said, "Your kids are over achievers. How do you get them to play so hard? I replied that it wasn't that my players were overachievers (although truth be known, they were) but that his were underachievers. As far as getting them to play so hard--I demand it. The players know it is expected basketball them by me and their teammates. I went on to explain my theory of teamwork, and the fist.

Teams have two choices--they can either be like the hand or to be like the fist. The hand is made of five fingers working independently of each other. Spread the five fingers of your hand and you have peaks and valleys. Some nights, when everything is going right, you are on basketball of one of those peaks. However, it is easy to slide back down to the depths of the valley. And, if I slap you with the open hand, it is going to sting, it is going to embarrass you, and it is going to hurt your pride. But, it is not going to deliver a knockout punch.

The fist on the other hand, is a tight-knit group--pulling together in a common cause. Sure there are still the five individual fingers of the hand, but now they are working with the other fingers. If I close the fist and hit you I can deliver a knockout punch. When you come to you wonder what in the world hit you.

Mike Krzyzewski, long time Head Coach at Duke University also talks about the Fist. In his book, Leading with the Heart, Coach K says, "I look at the members of our team like the five fingers of a hand. Some hands have small fingers that easily come together as a fist. Other hands have very large fingers but, if they never come together as a team, they probably won't be as powerful as the smaller hand does. In other words, if five talented individuals don't perform as a team, they may not be as strong as five less-talented individuals who do."

Greyhound Racing
