A Message to Players and Coaches

-Looking Back to Look Ahead-

Last season is long basketball and another is just around the corner. For some teams, there was much to celebrate. For others it was a season of despair, frustration, and second guessing.

It is time to take a look back at the season -

1. What were your individual goals?
2. Did you accomplish your goals?
3. If not, why not? If so, did you reset your goals to help you reach new levels of success?
4. What were the team goals?
5. Did your team accomplish them?
6. If not, why not? If you were able to accomplish initial team goals, did you reset them?

"All great men are dreamers. Some, however, allow their dreams to basketball You should nurse your dreams and protect them through bad times and tough times; to the sunshine and light which will always come." Woodrow Wilson - U.S. President

It has been said that you can not know where you are heading until you know where you have been. As you reflect on last season, it is time to make some decisions.

If you are a senior athlete, do you have the ability, desire, and attitude to continue your playing career beyond this year (college)? Are you willing to make the sacrifices necessary to be your best?

If you are an underclassman, is it your goal to continue playing in HS and college? Do you spend time in the weight room getting stronger? Do you read about your sport, learning from the experience of the athletes who have achieved a high level of success? It is said that success leaves clues. Are you coachable? Are you a team player?

If you are a coach, do you see yourself doing the things necessary to better prepare yourself and your team for the season ahead? Things like attending clinics and/or purchasing coaching materials to help you and your team?

Former Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes stated, "The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving."

As we look ahead to the coming season we need to make some decisions. Ask yourself-

1. Do I enjoy being a part of the team concept?
2. Am I willing to put in the time and effort necessary to be the best?
3. Do I have the desire, the discipline, and the determination that will allow me to achieve my goals?

Quotes to help you on your journey:

"The price of success is hard work, dedication, to the job at hand, and the determination that whether win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand." Vince Lombardi

"The starting point for all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat." Napolean Hill

"Dreams are what get you started. Discipline keeps you going." Jim Ryun

Dreams don't work unless you do. Samuel Johnson

"You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hope rise to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eye, it is the swing in your gait, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of your will and your energy to execute your ideas. Enthusiasts are fighters. They have fortitude. They have staying qualities. Enthusiasm is at the bottom of all progress! With it there is accomplishment. Without it there are only alibis." Motto on Henry Ford's Fireplace
